PAINT CORRECTION

If you drive in the Lowcountry, your vehicle’s paint is under constant attack. Salt air rolling in off the marshes, year-round UV, and subtropical humidity all accelerate clear coat damage — and what looks like “dirty paint” is often swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, and etching embedded in the clear coat itself. No amount of washing will fix those defects. They need to be polished out.

Paint correction is the machine-polishing process that levels your clear coat to remove those defects and restore true gloss. At Lux Detailer we use professional-grade dual-action polishers, cutting and finishing pads, and pro compounds — brought directly to driveways across Bluffton, Hilton Head, Beaufort, Savannah, Pooler, and Richmond Hill. No shop drop-offs, no rental cars. Get a free quote today.

WHY YOUR PAINT NEEDS CORRECTION

Over time your clear coat accumulates defects: swirl marks from improper washing, light scratches from daily driving, oxidation from UV exposure, water spots and mineral etching from rain, and chemical etching from bird droppings or tree sap. These defects don’t come off with wash and wax — they live inside the clear coat, and they need to be polished out.

Our process starts with a full decontamination wash: foam cannon pre-soak, pH-neutral hand wash, iron fallout remover, and clay bar treatment to strip every bonded contaminant from the paint. We then test a small area before a single pad touches the rest of the car, to find the gentlest pad and compound combination that still gets the result. The condition and the age of the paint both decide what it can safely take.

Only then do we begin correction. Every panel is inspected under LED swirl-finder lighting between passes, using methods refined over years of hands-on experience on Lowcountry paint. Read our FAQ for care instructions.

Correct the paint, then seal it under a 9H ceramic coating. 3 to 5 years of protection with proper care.

  • Machine polishing of paintwork to remove swirls and light scratches
  • Premium 9H base ceramic coating, lasts 3 to 5 years
  • Full clay bar decontamination and surface preparation

Correcting before coating is what makes the finish last. The coating locks in corrected paint rather than sealing swirls underneath it. That holds for a brand-new car too — factory paint arrives with sanding marks, transport damage and dealer wash swirls, and correcting them is what lets the coating bond properly.

A large vehicle means a 3-row SUV, van, lifted or dually truck, or anything oversized. The fee is shown on each package above. Two $399 bundles can be added to any coating package. Glass & Wheels Coating — $399. Interior Ceramic Coating — $399: leather, plastic and vinyl cleaned, prepped and sealed with a specialty professional-grade coating. Either one is an add-on, not a package on its own. Heavy pet hair, embedded stains or sand may need Custom Work at $120 per hour, always quoted on-site before we start.

OUR PAINT CORRECTION PROCESS

Our workflow is built around two levels of correction, so the process matches your paint’s actual condition.

One-Step Correction — for light swirls and mild oxidation. A single machine pass removes 50–60% of defects and restores significant gloss. Ideal for a daily driver that needs a refresh. Typical time: 4 to 5 hours on most sedans.

Two-Stage Correction — for moderate swirls, scratches, and oxidation. Stage one uses a cutting compound with cutting pads to level defects. Stage two refines with a finishing polish and soft pads for maximum gloss. Removes 85–95% of correctable defects. Typical time: about 6 hours 30 minutes, depending on the size and condition of the vehicle.

We finish every correction with an isopropyl alcohol panel wipe to strip polishing oils and reveal the true result. That is the ideal moment to add ceramic coating and lock in the corrected finish for 3 to 5 years.

Not when it is done correctly. We test a small area first to find the gentlest combination that still gets the result, and we match the work to the condition and age of the paint. On older single-stage paint, for example, we use a light polish rather than a two-stage correction. Safe correction typically removes just a few microns — less than 10% of total clear coat thickness. Our process is designed to preserve clear coat for the life of the vehicle.
A one-step correction is $549 and is booked as Enhancement Correction Exterior. A full two-stage paint correction is $799. Paint correction with a 9H ceramic coating is $1,099. Yes — paint correction and ceramic coating are the perfect pairing. Correction restores your clear coat to a flawless surface. Ceramic coating then locks that surface in for 3 to 5 years, protecting against swirl marks, UV fade, bird droppings, tree sap, and water spots. Applying ceramic coating without correction first just seals in existing defects.
